Welcome to video 11 of 34, two minute videos outlining my new book, Made to Thrive. Made to Thrive details the 5 key roles that leaders must undertake in order to transition from being only a good leader, to being a great leader. These 5 roles are Accountability, Ambassador, Culture, Strategy, and Succession Planning.
Today we’re going to be talking about 2.1 in the Ambassador section. 2.1 The CEO has a system to build a public profile such as industry forums, industry leadership, blogging or speaking.
In the 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer a survey of 33,000 people across the world, people identified that the number 1 job of a CEO was to build trust in the organisation.
This was more important than high quality products, decisions that were based around values, higher profitability, and even increasing shareholder value.
Therefore, the publics trust in a business is dependant on the publics trust in its leader.
If you don’t cultivate and control your public profile, it’s unlikely that people will find your business authentic.
See if you went to visit a website that was full of stock text, and stock images with no reference to the people who actually work in the business, it’s very very hard to trust that business.
It’s just stock! Stock images, stock people. There’s no reason to trust it.
It is the transparency, and the level of vulnerability, within reason that helps to build trust.
That’s because the leader is the custodian of trust in an organisation. And that leaders position in the public profile significantly impacts not only the general public and customers perception, but also that of potential and current employees.
And that’s why the role of an Ambassador is impacted by the leaders public profile and how transparent and authentic it is and that’s why that can impact the level of top performers and also the level of retention.
