Welcome to video 17 in this series of 34, two minute videos outlining the key concepts in my new book, Made to Thrive.
Made to Thrive details the five key roles that a leader must undertake to transition from being a good leader, to being a great leader. Those five roles are Accountability, Ambassador, Culture, Strategy, and Succession Planning.
Today we’re going to talk about 3.1 Core Values and Core Purpose are known by all employees.
In Jim Collins book “Built to Last” there were 3 cultural attributes that separated the visionary companies from the rest who were the best in their industry.
And those 3 cultural attributes were
Number 1, there was a stronger indoctrination into a core ideology.
Number 2, there was a greater tightness of fit. People tended to fit well into the company and its ideology, or not fit at all.
Number 3, there was a greater sense of elitism.
There was a sense of belonging to something special and superior.
In summary, the visionary companies showed greater cultism.
People tended to fit into the ideology, or, they would be ejected like a virus.
As a researcher on the book put it, ‘it seems to be binary, you’re either in, and you’re fully indoctrinated, into these cultures, or you’re out, there’s no middle ground’.
The job of a leader is to harness peoples energy and desire by building a closely aligned team around a shared set of values and purpose with a clear direction and vision for the company where it will go and what it will achieve.
Therefore to positively impact the productivity and retention of your team, people must deeply understand the core values and the core purpose to the degree that people who don’t fit, are almost ejected like a virus.
Then in the context of your cultural norms, can you make your culture a little more cultish?
