In the 1974 Harvard Business Review article entitled “Management Time: Who’s got the monkey?” William OnckenJr asked questions about the burden of subordinates and why managing them and developing an effective accountability framework is so important.

This article is one of the two most popular HBR reprints and was in fact so popular it was the origin of the popular phrase “get the monkey off your back”. You can buy the article here for $6.95 from HBR.
