Hope you’re Thriving!
Well, we made it.
We all know what 2020 was, and I was always taught when I was young that if you don’t have anything nice to say about someone, then don’t say anything.
On the 5th February, I sent my first email entitled “Coronavirus & the magic of compound growth” about the virus and using the limited data from Wuhan at the time, noted that if left unchecked in 60 days “By 5th April 12 million cases outside China with 240,000 deaths”.
As it turns out we hit the case numbers on the 10th July and we hit the predicted mortality numbers on the 4th of May.
At the time it seemed inconceivable that we would get anywhere near those numbers. Yet the juxtaposition of the logic within the model by simply scaling the numbers at the growth rate, with the significance of the impact if it occurred was daunting.
When I look at the map today, as shown below from Johns Hopkins University, it feels like we still have a long road to travel.
Equally, despite all our advancements as humans, it has been our humanity that has brought us to this place. The good, the bad, the ugly.
I read this today, written by a thought leader/expert in their newsletter.
‘I lay the blame on the “experts” – a term I’ve come to despise in 2020 … the crowd/tribe is so much wiser than any leader/expert.”
No, this is the whole problem and is fundamentally wrong. The entire success of modern civilisation was born from The Enlightenment including the scientific method, reason, toleration and the separation of church and state (among others).
As I discussed in this April 4th newsletter in detail when we allow tribes to blossom we end up with Anti-Vaxers, Genetically Modified Organism protesters and climate change denialists. Experts aren’t the problem, it’s the deviation from the principles of The Enlightenment that are the problem.
From the 4th April newsletter;
“The internet, which ironically was founded by scientists, was not founded and structured on the principles of The Enlightenment in the same way Western democracies were, and today the more a city, state or nation has deviated away from the principles of The Enlightenment, the higher the price they will pay. Or perhaps put another way, the more a public leader has publicly refuted the scientific method in any area, and the less they have prioritised STEM, then the more likely it is that they have underfunded science and medical facilities and therefore, the more their society will suffer.”
The number 1 challenge for 2021
My podcast partner Kevin and I are currently recording a series about the most important things you need to do heading into 2021, which I will update you on as they are released in the coming weeks.
But beyond that, I’m thinking that the most important challenge we and specifically business leaders will face heading into 2021 is discrimination.
A survey a few weeks ago showed that 39% of US adults would not get the COVID19 vaccine.
Without even discussing the fact that herd immunity won’t be achieved with only 61% vaccinated or carrying antibodies, there is an elephant in the room.
How do you operate your business when some people are immunised, some are vaccinated and some are not, and when some refuse to be vaccinated?
What is your duty of care as an employer, as we traverse the next phase of the pandemic?
And what of customers? How do you deal with customers who are not, or refuse to be vaccinated?
A couple of weeks ago Qantas CEO Alan Joyce declared international travellers must have a COVID-19 vaccine to get on a flight. Equally, if you look at Yellow Fever many countries require a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate before you can enter.
And this is what makes me think the most important challenge we will face heading into 2021 is discrimination. If a customer, employee or stakeholder refuses to get a vaccination, or comply with your policy on COVID, whatever that is, what recourse do you have? Can you fire them? Can you be taken to court for discrimination?
If an employee is not yet entitled to a vaccination yet and they’re relying on you to protect them with your safety policies, and others don’t comply, what does that mean.
This may seem a long way off because vaccinations have only started and the rollout is likely to take much of 2021, but I suspect that quickly the difference between having and not having a vaccination will become increasingly important as the Qantas example shows.
Time to update Microsoft
In the last couple of days, news has emerged of what is possibly the worst cyber-attack ever on the US Government and Microsoft (being all we know at the time of writing), where hackers apparently have had full access into major departments including some of the government’s most critical agencies – including the departments of State, Homeland Security, Treasury and Commerce as well as the National Institutes of Health including all files and emails for up to the past 6 months.
And that’s only what we know about at this point.
The attackers penetrated servers through a piece of monitoring software called SolarWinds. The system is used by hundreds of thousands of organizations globally, including most Fortune 500 companies and multiple U.S. federal agencies, which will now be scrambling to patch up their networks.
From the article;
“Once within a network, the code attacked Microsoft Office 365 products. Such an attack through Microsoft’s products “could have major consequences. Microsoft products are used globally, touching individual operating systems, video game services, cloud infrastructure, and more,” said Sivan Tehila, director of solution architecture at Perimeter 81, a cloud software security company also based in Tel Aviv, Israel. Microsoft, which has released an update to block the malicious code, noted that the code, once in the network, sought to collect credentials to gain additional access. Such an attack “is quite rare,” Sasson said. “The way the malware acts it is (as if it is) shutting itself down. It’s trying to be very secretive and trying to communicate low and slow, what we call in the industry, to make sure it is not being detected.”
The point is, if you use any Microsoft software, especially 365, update it ASAP!
Rest and recuperate
I’m going to be taking a few weeks off for the holidays, and in the coming weeks I’m going to keep sending a weekly email, but the plan is a ‘best of’ email with the 2 or 3 best articles I liked, or the most clicked by readers, from the past year. I’ll be back mid-January into the regular format.
Today I’ve formulated a simple reading list that will be included in the coming weeks. It’s a combination of my favourites that you may be interested to dig into over your holidays. I’ll include it today and the same thing for the coming weeks.
I hope you have a great holiday season, and please take care when travelling, and look after yourself, rest, recuperate so you can enter the new year with a new sense of vitality.
